Zimbabwe Beat Pakistan. WOW!
Lo' and behold! Zimbabwe on a roll. This time its the defending champs, Pakistan! yes, you saw it right.You never know with the Stanis, they may lose to Zim and beat the top team the next day. Anyways, coming to this match, Zim piled on 143 in their 20 overs. Chigumbura was the hero again scoring 49(35). Coventry and Masakadza also chipped in with handy runs. Boom Boom was the star with the ball picking 4/24. The target seemed pretty easy but not to be .Except for Kamran Akmal, Alam and Misbah , no one even reached double digits. They were "BOWLED OUT" for 131. Prosper Utseya really prospered with the ball , picking up 4 wickets. Chigumbura cleaned up the tail, picking up 3 wickets. Mind blowing performance. Its good to seem them taking these practice matches seriously. It would be nice to see them giving a tough competition in the league matches. The advantage is they seem to have the right bowling . Slow medium pace and spin is the need of the hour and that is helping them big time. Way to go ZIM! WAH! WAH!!

Zimbabwe beat Australia... AGAIN!
Its not the first time this is happening, a similar thing happened in SAF in the league match during the 2007 T20 WC. Brendon Taylor gave Aussies sleepless nights in the first edition. This time, the venue was Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Aussies would have loved to take revenge against ZIM , but not to be. ZIM batted first and were rocked by OZ full throttle pace attack. 4 wickets down for 36 after 6 overs Enter Chigumbura and Craig Ervine(B/O Sean Ervine)and they countered the OZ attack excellently. Chigumbura sent the ball screaming to every part of the ground.Watson and Christian were murdered. They bowled 2 overs each and their sum of 4 overs cost 63 runs. Phew!! Chigumbura scored a rapid 76(35) and was well supported by Craig Ervine 39(30). Mitch Johnson dint disappoint his fans,he picked up 4 wickets and Lee surprisingly bowled well.Zim set a target of 173. Warner and Watto took strike. Watto's poor run in the match continued and he departed early. Warner and Clarke then got off to a flier and tables started turning when they required 42 of 18 balls. Wickets fell in desperation of runs. It all came down to the last over when they needed 13 runs. Clarke, who steering their team to victory till then,was bowled by Mpofu. Johnson was run out immediately and Lee scored only 1 run of the final delivery. That's it !Australia lost by 1 run. It was party time for the Zimbabwe guys. Its a wake up alarm for the OZ. Guess, they took the match pretty lightly and it cost them badly. Warner scored 72(49) and Clarke scored 49(42).

W.W.W.S. - SAF's tour of India Begins
- The Proteas started the Indian tour on a bold note against the Board President’s xi crucial warm-up match. Captain Smith had his intentions clear giving all his bowlers and his batsmen good bowling practice ahead of the most awaited (read retarded) 2 match test series yet. His frontline pace attack made mince meat of the top order. The day was severe on high reputations, as Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Abhinav Mukund all failed miserably. Pandey disappointed as well but, since he outscored all named previously and he attacked the bowlers he is pardoned. Biff gave his spinners a dozen overs each and this allowed Abhishek Nayar and Shikhar Dhawan who came 6-down (can you believe that) to build a partnership. Nayar scored a ton exactly and Dhawan was dismissed at 70 and thus the BPxi bundled out for 318 on day 1 of the warm up game. Saffers looked happy, Biff satisfied.. nice lunch I suppose.
- The Duleep trophy final also started with very less attention as both teams looked depleted due to players unavailability. South Zone led by Dinesh-butter-fingers-Karthik won the toss and decided to bat first. West zone ran through the top order and then entered captain Dinesh-I-can-fukin-bat-Karthik. He took the responsibility once again and restored some respect at the end of day one. Karthik unbeaten on 161 with the help of Gautam and Sathish have taken the SZ’s score to 356/6 at stumps.
- Meanwhile, the bite-gate controversy only involved more cheers. Shahid BoOm bOom Afridi claimed he was only trying to smell the ball and feel it. You can do that Shahid but please, avoid doing that with your teeth next time. Since he is banned for 2 T20 internationals and they are playing just one against Australia and he is the captain of Pakistan in T20’s PCB have announced Shoaib Malik will lead the team for the game against the Aussies.
- Ottis Gibson will now take over as the new coach of the West Indies confirmed WICB. Only, he won’t take over immediately but, from the home series against Zimbabwe.

B.B.O.T.D. – THE LESSER KNOWNS
Murray Goodwin
Muzza as he is known, born in Harare, Zimbabwe grew up in Australia. If that sounds strange he later returned to Zimbabwe and played international cricket for Zimbabwe and when things got difficult he moved back to Australia. In all of this a true quality cricketer was lost, I say lost because most people do not recognize the man and his talent. Goodwin after returning to Australia was a regular member in the Western Warriors line up of Western Australia domestic team. He possessed what quality top-order batsmen required. He has played a lot of cricket for Sussex domestic side as well where his numbers boast of his caliber. He scored a club-record 335* against Leicestershire to seal Sussex's first Championship title in their 164-year history. Later he broke his own record scoring 344* against Somerset in 2009. In the 2008 pro-40 championship requiring 3 runs off the last ball, Murray hit a 6 off Charlie Shreck against Nottinghamshire CCC, his 87 not out from 64 balls steered Sussex to victory. He also featured in the controversial ICL (Indian Cricket League) in which he represented the Ahmedabad Rockets. Later quit the league to commit to Sussex and rightly so. To describe his potential, he is most definitely a talent we have missed watching.
Salim Durani
Salim Durani is described as an unpredictable genius for his potential of changing games be it with the bat or with the ball. His numbers were not the greatest so, he never would be listed in the likes of Sir Gary Sobers, Sir Richard Hadlee, etc.. But his ability to knock the ball over the ropes was no less ordinary. With the ball he won quite a few games for India, and it was then he was hero-worshipped across India. Durani had a special rapport with the spectators, who once agitated, when he was inexplicably dropped for the Kanpur Test in 1973, with placards and slogans like ``No Durani, no Test''. Durani a very good looking gentleman, with huge public admiration featured in a film in the 70’s as a point to showcase his charm that he had amongst the public.
Subhash Gupte
Gupte is regarded as one of test cricket’s finest spinners. So as to say Sir Gary Sobers described him as the best leg spinner and it was a pleasure to see. Gupte was a big spinner of the ball with a very effective googly as well. In fact he possessed two variants of the googly in his armory. Gupte had a very immaculate line and length which proved why he was very effective. In fact his average suggests he was more effective away than at home. He once took 9 wickets in an innings against West Indies. Lance Gibbs, the only wicket he missed was dropped by the wicket keeper. But, he did manage to take all ten in an innings in first class cricket against Bahawalpur CC, and once in Lancashire league for Rishton. It is sad that a man of his talent is not well known and not recognized with the likes of Bedi, Chandrasekhar or Prasanna. The manner in which he was sacked is a tale for another post. He later settled in the West Indies as he was married to a girl from Trinidad.
Tim Southee
Amazing how we have written about quite a few kiwi pacers already, Tim Southee is another to join the bandwagon. When we spoke of either Ian Butler or Chris Martin it shows the quality and the numerous options of seam bowlers right now available in Kiwi-land. The only things to have changed since then are the injury to Bond (nothing new) and O’Brien announcing his retirement. This doesn’t mean that New Zealand is on a drought of seam bowlers. They have ample storage in their kitty. Tim is fairly young (turns 21 today) and is a great find. He moves the ball, particularly away from the right handed batsman. He impressed a lot during the u-19 World Cup picking 17 wickets @ 6.64 and was rightly awarded the player of the tournament. On his test debut against England he took 5-fer and destroyed the English top order. He dented quite a few reputations like Strauss, Vaughan, Pieterson. Southee to me is an exciting talent in the days to come. And if, you haven’t seen much of him, you better watch out.
